Brendan K. McCracken, MD

Brendan McCracken, MD, FACS, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained general and critical care surgeon who uses the most minimally invasive approaches available so you can return to your everyday life as rapidly as possible. Dr. McCracken serves as director of surgical education and program director of the Virtua general surgery residency program and as clinical assistant professor of surgery at the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. McCracken earned his medical degree at the Rutgers – New Jersey Medical School (formerly the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – New Jersey Medical School), where he also completed his general surgery residency and a research fellowship. He completed his surgical critical care fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Prior to coming to Virtua, Dr. McCracken served as an acute care surgeon at Inova Fairfax Hospital and as a trauma surgeon at Hahnemann University Hospital, where he was also the program director of the Drexel University College of Medicine/Hahnemann University Hospital general surgery residency. Dr. McCracken has published research in numerous medical journals and has lectured widely. He has also trained physicians, allied health professionals, and government organizations, including multiple police departments nationally and internationally in outpatient management traumatic injury. Patients describe Dr. McCracken as caring, courteous, and highly professional. They praise him for being knowledgeable, attentive, and a good listener who takes time to clearly explain medical issues, helping them feel informed and confident in their care. Outside of medicine, Dr. McCracken enjoys camping, hiking, playing music, bicycling, and going to the gym. He is active with Scouting America and the Pennsport String Band.
