About

Professional Statement

Joshua Coren, DO, MBA, FACOFP, is the vice dean of clinical affairs at the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine, where he also serves as a professor of family medicine and director of continuing medical education. A board-certified family physician, Dr. Coren is dedicated to advancing high-quality, patient-centered care while supporting clinicians in delivering their best work. He earned his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his family medicine residency at what is now the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine. He also holds an MBA from Saint Joseph’s University Haub School of Business.
In his leadership role, Dr. Coren drives initiatives that strengthen clinical care, expand clinician education, and support faculty development—ensuring that both current and future health care professionals are equipped to meet patients’ evolving needs. He leads the design of continuing medical education programs at both national and international levels, helping clinicians stay current with evidence-based, compassionate care practices. He currently leads initiatives in clinical care, continuing medical education, and faculty development. Dr. Coren is board-certified in family medicine and plays an integral role in developing national and international CME programs.
Dr. Coren also oversees federally funded research and educational projects, initiatives that aim to improve clinical outcomes on high-stakes medical examinations and enhance physician training, ultimately benefiting the patients and communities they serve. He has secured and led multi-year, multi-million-dollar SAMHSA grant funding (in collaboration with the New Jersey Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services – NJDMHAS) for Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) training and implementation across clinical and educational settings. This includes serving as principal investigator for major initiatives that expand SBIRT curriculum and services in osteopathic medical education, student-led projects, and community-based care. He has also received New Jersey Health Foundation funding for student-led SBIRT initiatives and continues to advance substance use prevention and education efforts. He has served as principal investigator for additional federal grants focused on training osteopathic medical students in underserved communities and played a key role in the school’s COVID-19 response, including as medical director for a major onsite vaccine clinic.
Additional leadership and contributions include serving as a site chair for medical school accreditation through the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation, active professional leadership involvement with the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP)—where he has received honors such as the Osteopathic Family Medicine Educator of the Year (2022) and Physician of the Year awards—and board involvement in the ACO collaboration with Virtua Medical Group. He also serves as medical director for the Physician Assistant (PA) program at Rowan-Virtua SOM.
As an executive coach, Dr. Coren enjoys helping guide medical students, residents, and physicians through their professional journeys. He combines clinical expertise, academic leadership, and coaching to empower health care leaders, focusing on resilience, decision-making, team dynamics, and aligning personal values with organizational goals. He has created numerous international training programs to enhance primary care training throughout the world, with focused efforts in China as co-director of the International Primary Care Education Alliance.

Dr. Coren listened carefully, asked me questions, understood my concern about steroids and diabetes, looked at my history, ordered bloodwork to check my endocrine system so he can monitor my endocrine system, asked me questions about how often I was using my rescue inhaler, (which was a lot) realized that I was seriously ill, and started me on antibiotic and steroid treatment that has allowed me to start recovering and has finally started to unclog my ears, allow my sinuses to calm down, allow my cough to subside, take down the asthma attacks, relieve the severe congestion in my chest, breath without having my heart run like a racehorse. At times I could feel my heart beat at high speed because I couldn't breathe. I am starting to feel better finally. Thank you Dr. Coren.

Something needs to be done about health insurance- a 3300 deductable before insurance kicks in is just preposterous.

I don't like that they want to bring in students every time I'm there. I always say no and that is respected. Perhaps make a note on my preference so I don't get asked each time.
