Gengo Sunagawa, MD

Gengo Sunagawa, MD, PhD, is a highly respected cardiothoracic surgeon with expertise in coronary bypass surgery, valve surgery, aortic disease, ECMO, and advanced heart failure management. He has completed specialized training in heart and lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support, including LVAD implantation, bringing valuable experience in the care of complex cardiac patients. Dr. Sunagawa earned his medical and doctoral degrees from the Kobe University School of Medicine in Japan. He completed an internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship from Saiseikai Nakatsu Hospital. Dr. Sunagawa continued his advanced training with a cardiac surgery residency at Kurashiki Central Hospital and cardiac surgery followships at Sakurabashi Watanabe Hospital and the Temple University School of Medicine. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in biomedical engineering at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute. Prior to arriving at Virtua, Dr. Sunagawa served as an assistant professor of cardiovascular surgery at Temple University and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He has published research in numerous medical journals and has presented at conferences worldwide. Dr. Sunagawa is married with three children. Outside of medicine, he enjoys fishing, watching sports like rugby—which he used to play—and baseball.
