About Ibrahim Sultan
Professional Statement
Ibrahim Sultan, MD, FACS, FACC, FAHA, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained cardiothoracic surgeon and vice president of clinical operations for Virtua’s cardiovascular service line. He specializes in aortic disease, including aneurysms and dissections; heart valve disease (such as aortic and mitral valve disease); and transcatheter heart valve therapies such as TAVR; and reoperative cardiac surgery.
Dr. Sultan helps patients understand all their treatment options, from transcatheter procedures to minimally invasive cardiac surgery to complex open heart surgery. Because of his experience across the full spectrum of heart valve repair and replacement, he can recommend the approach that best fits each patient’s anatomy, medical condition, risk profile, and goals. Dr. Sultan also welcomes patients seeking a second opinion for aortic aneurysms, aortic valve repair and mitral valve repair, minimally invasive heart surgery, or prior heart surgery. He is highly focused on quality, safety, and measurable outcomes across every stage of a patient’s care.
Dr. Sultan earned his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medicine. He completed his surgical internship and residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he served as chief resident. He then completed advanced training in cardiothoracic surgery, aortic surgery, and transcatheter and structural heart therapies at the University of Pennsylvania.
Before joining Virtua, Dr. Sultan spent a decade at the University of Pittsburgh and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), where he served as professor and chief of cardiac surgery, and co-director of its Heart and Vascular Institute. During that time, he helped develop and lead interdisciplinary programs for patients with aortic disease, heart valve disease, and structural heart conditions.
Dr. Sultan has authored more than 500 peer-reviewed publications in leading medical journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, JACC, and Circulation, and has served in leadership positions for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Cardiology, and the American Heart Association. He is also a sought-after national and international speaker who has delivered more than 200 lectures in the United States and abroad on aortic surgery, heart valve surgery, and TAVR.
