About Prakash J. Mathew
Professional Statement
A native of San Francisco, Dr. Mathew completed both his medical degree and MBA at the University of California, Irvine. He completed a general surgery residency at the University of Arizona, followed by plastic surgery training at the University of Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital and fellowship training in reconstructive microsurgery at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Mathew specializes in advanced breast reconstruction techniques, including DIEP flap and implant-based reconstruction. He is one of only a few surgeons nationwide offering the Resensation® technique, which enables nipple neurotization after nipple-sparing mastectomy. He specializes in nerve reconstruction and complex oncologic reconstruction. His clinical practice also includes aesthetic surgery, specializing in blepharoplasty, breast augmentation, breast reduction, abdominoplasty, and body contouring after massive weight loss. He also offers surgical treatment of lymphedema and lipedema, utilizing modern microsurgical and physiological techniques to improve function and quality of life.
Dr. Mathew has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and textbook chapters and serves as a reviewer for leading journals, including Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and Aesthetic Surgery Journal. Dr. Mathew is an active member of the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The Aesthetic Society, and the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery. Dr. Mathew is one of the only surgeons nationwide certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

I think maybe paying a little more attention to mental health during the whole process. Maybe a few questions to see where they are mentally and maybe history of abuse or PTSD...things like that. I struggled during my process. I didn't gain enough information on what to expect after the surgery. I didn't know I needed it either. Like how and why things looked the way they did. Side note: the patient also needs to be willing to start/participate in the conversation about their own mental health issues.
