About Susan I. Kaufman

Professional Statement

Susan Kaufman, DO, FACOG, is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist who provides a personalized approach to gynecologic care and lifelong wellness. Dr. Kaufman is passionate about advancing women’s health and expanding and improving access to care. She specializes in pediatric and adolescent gynecology, LGBTQ+ care, and gynecologic care for teens and women with special needs. Dr. Kaufman earned her medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her OB/GYN residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Throughout her career, she has educated and mentored future generations of physicians, including OB/GYN residents at Virtua and other hospitals, as well as medical and college students. Dr. Kaufman also served as a lieutenant commander in the United States Public Health Service, caring for Native Americans, Navajo, and Hopi in Arizona. She is a frequent speaker about women’s health and is active with a number of professional organizations, including the Obstetrical Society of Philadelphia and the North American Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. Outside of medicine, Dr. Kaufman enjoys painting, sculpting, crafting, and hiking. Recently, she and a former medical student published a book for girls with autism and other neurodivergences and their parents about puberty and menses.

    Yes, I felt it was my daughter's very first time with a gynecologist and she's 13, first time, very young and we were going basically for mood issues that are on very serious side. And my 13-year-old is very mentally younger, 15, not 15, 13. And I just felt that I wasn't really, I know [PHI] signed off on me being able to talk. I didn't feel like I had much of a voice. And the doctor then said she wouldn't speak to me alone, that [PHI] needed to give me permission, which I thought she already had when she signed off in the beginning. It was a very strange situation for me, but maybe it's just because these are the laws. But I just felt like a little more warmth from the doctor towards me as the mother would have been nice.

    Dr. Kaufman was very caring and took her time listening to all of her concerns and it was very appreciated. I'm very grateful for the help she provided to my daughter.

    Dr. Kaufman was extremely thorough and made sure to get my entire medical history in order to provide me the best possible care. I felt truly listened to for the first time in a long time with a medical professional and I would absolutely recommend her to other family and friends and I hope to see her again in the future should I need care.
